born in 1971 in gravesand, kent, england in to a history professor, clark barlow, and his wife, a nurse, sabine gottleib, magdalena barlow enjoyed life as an only child. her parents both worked long hours, to provide for the family, and often left her in the care of her grandmother, whose idea of watching the young girl consisted of sitting her down in front of a television. it was there she found her love of acting and often told her grandmother that one day, she was going to be on benny hill.
when her mother would pick her up from her grandmothers, magdalena would act out what she saw on benny hill to her mom, telling her what she told her grandmother, one day she was going to do the same. her mother, being the loving and supportive woman she was, would indulge in her daughters fantasy's of being an actress and ask her to remember more and more from the show, that way they didn't have to turn on the television at home.
as the years went by, and magdalena's obsession for being an actress grew, she talked her mother into letting her take acting lessons. at the age of ten, her mother agreed, despite not having time to take madgalena herself. sabine allowed her daughter to travel by herself to her lessons, where she learned a variety of things, mostly that comedy was hardly her forte. her teacher, mrs. mary abbott, saw a potential in the young girl, which resulted in her signing magdalena up for an audition for peter pan. magdalena, having no real theatre experience, was hoping for any role and was shocked when she landed the part of wendy darling.
it was during her stint doing theatre that a talent scout saw her and approached her when she was twelve for commercial work. her parents, despite supporting her, were wary of the idea, as it meant she would be traveling to london to do them. but her teacher, mrs. abbott stepped in and volunteered to help take the young girl back and forth. the commercial work ended up growing into auditions for various television shows and movies, none of which she booked.
that was, until april 1984, when she was thirteen when she auditioned for the labyrinth. at first she was passed over because she was too young, but when they were still casting in january of 1985, they came back to magdalena. she won the role and started filming opposite of david bowie in march of 1985. the experience was one she could not put into words, despite being asked to many times. and quickly, she booked her next role, wish you were here, which was released in 1987.
despite urging from her agent and mrs. abbott, magdalena took time off after she completed filming on wish you were here so she could finish schooling. she decided to attend the university of the arts london to further her education and expand her possibilities. during her first semester there, she balanced class and auditions, eventually deciding to drop out when she booked both hamlet and edward scissorhands since the latter meant relocating to florida to film.
as the auditions and roles came in, she found it harder and harder to pursue her education and decided that real life experience surpassed being in a classroom, despite her love for the stage. she started becoming a familiar face around households, which changed in 1997 when she became not just a face people knew, but a name when she landed the role of rose dewitt bukater in titanic.
despite the fame from titanic, madgalena decided to take a turn in her career and take on darker roles, to challenge herself as an actress. the move was frowned upon by her agent, as he considered it harder to come back to mainstream roles when one takes on something that could type cast them or make them questionable for a casting agent to want to book. the advice didn't stop her, or her career, from growing.
in 2006, she received a second academy award nomination, this time for her work in little children, though she ended up losing to helen mirren. in 2008, she won her first academy award for the reader, as well as her first golden globe for revolutionary road in the same year.
on january 1, 2009, madgalena shocked the world as she finally settled down by marrying director, producer, screenwriter, and all around jack of all trades, scott loskey. the two married in a private ceremony when the clock struck midnight into the new year. despite being private affair, photos and word leaked to the press, and soon enough, it was over the papers that the two had been wed.
she shocked the world even more on april 17th, 2010 when she gave birth to the couples first child, a boy named alfie oscar loskey. despite never having planned to be a mother, and her age, magdalena welcomed her son into the world with open arms, becoming an adoring mother she never knew she could be. slowing down on roles, she spent as much time as she could as an at home mother, before returning to work and bringing alfie along with her on set when the set allows for her.
